It has a pretty consistent theme going on with the bulb on the back sprouting into a flower while the body grows in a way that makes sense with the pokémon being more mature

the artist was going for the awkward teenager phase with these 2nd stage evos and I think he pulled it off pretty well

Samurott would get less flak if it stood up 100% of the time. Its evo line is a first and only 3 staged line were a biped for two stages suddenly ends up as a quadruped and Dewott never previewed it's structural jump.
