It was obvious they were gonna take a different route with misty and the anime as a whole in season 1 since she even stuck around which im guessing was a final choice by the older writer before it went to shit and had no control whats so ever.
season one also was made in the early 90s which was still close to the 80s were things were a bit more mature even in kids shows. they made the rest of it for american and the western world at some point when they noticed mature themes and humor wouldn't fly.

If anything, thinking that animation affects the plot would be an argument against the new anime, as in "it looks like shit so its plot will be shit." In this case, people think SM won't be good not because of the animation, but because of the premise.

Animation/props etc have major impact on the outcome of the plot. It's there you get you into the story, understand the world building of said story and suppose to spare you all the unnecessary details that a book must give. Take this all away and you will be very very handicapped to making an even decent plot. Plot is more important but plot can't act on its own and must rely on animation/props etc.

Making a stick figure show with good plot simply impossible. And in pokemon the visuals play a big part of the plot. Battles being fought, pokemon being shown etc must have the details there or the plot won't much sense.

The Simpsons used to have PLENTY of QUALITY moments. Lots of characters whose skin colors changed within the same scenes, for example. Hell, Smithers was black for a whole episode because of an inking error. But the errors didn't matter because the writing used to be gold. Now, everything is on model, and while it's not as fluid, it's much cleaner and modern, but the writing is shit, so that's why it sucks.
