I remember somebody mentioning an existing anime not featuring ash as the main character it wasn't origins, Ami mistaken?

Yup, Chronicles. It's not really a proper series though, just a bunch of OVAs. Also it's not really separate from the Ash anime, more of a spinoff thing set within the same canon, just episodes that don't feature Ash himself.
