No. The only reason why it can go Ash Form is because of its new ability. I think it's called Battle Bond or something similar.

Battle Bond is an ability, which triggers the "evolution" if Greninja knocks out an opponent.

You can have a Protean Greninja, or a Battle Bond Greninja. Not both.

I was so sure Ash Greninja would keep Battle Bond when it changed, then I remembered Megas don't do that. Nah probably not, most Megas get different abilities than their hidden abilities, but I wouldn't put it past them to do that.

I posted this before, but it should have been only regular Greninja with Battle Bond, and a new ability with the form change (just like mega evolution). Same with Zygarde. The cost of having no ability will be that it can hold an item.

So we can have 2 primals, 1 mega, and 2 special form changes (Zygarde and Greninja). What a time to be alive.

Greninja is ugly anyway.

One sharp yank on its 'scarf' and it would need major surgery to reattatch it.

Ash Greninja exists solely for the purpose of marketing the game to the next generation of Japan's 10 year olds. A poor attempt at trying to make kids believe Ninjas are cooler than Yokai.

I'm pretty sure Z crystals are gonna be useless. You are wasting an item slot on a single powerful attack, what's gonna happen if the opponent switches in something to bulk it or uses Protect/Substitute?

Type gems were used competitively in Gen V so it's not unreasonable that Z-crystals will have a niche use. They probably won't make a massive impact on the meta though

No, Greninja with Battle Bond won't get Protean on transformation. When the video showed an Ash-Greninja using an attack, there was no Protean activation.

Battle Bond seems to only give Greninja some sort of Limit Guage that allows it to transform into Ash-Greninja when it's full, kind of like Final Fantasy IX's Trance system.
