I wouldn't even have minded the dancing pop star/singing mermaid concept. I mean, it was bound to be unavoidable at one point and this just so happened to be it. But the eyelashes thing is just so weird to look at as well as the pink iris on Brionne's part, considering previous feminine starters have never done that, but still looked feminine, but still acceptable.
I'm fully well aware of my big threatening animals being actually female looking and my tiny frail animals actually being male and how all animals have gender differences and how the same could also be applied to the pokemon world. But this is unsettling in the sense that it feels and looks inspired by this culture Japan has over worshiping japanese cute little children/teenage idols, not really looking like it has any regard over whether it should look neutral or not, but heck, let's just make all boy Popplios pigtail wearing, frilly wearing pop idols. The layers of clothing details feel unnatural as well because it's in excess. Popplio had the fortune of only having one and it looked okay.
If this thing wasn't Fairy by the end of it all, I'd be going a lot more ape about it and even Brionne's not even part Fairy in its middle stage, but I'm still trying my best to stay open minded about it even though it unsettles me in ways even I cannot comprehend. It's cute conceptually but at the same time, it feels WRONG to find it cute due to certain details in its design, maybe because I find these details actually forced on us to be liked. Like "fake beauty" rather than natural beauty.
It's very clearly intended to become the next "idol" pokemon in the games and the anime series like Braixen and anyone who doesn't see that is plainly in denial.
I might pick it up when I'm more ambivalent to it since Water/Fairy is a interesting type combination, but as of now, the designs aren't really doing much for me as much as I try.
tl;dr muh frilly sea lions
