To be fair most RPGs have larger parties, with fewer options. It's easier to grind a party of three from a collection of seven than it is to grind a party of six one at a time from over 700 options. I think there really did need to be a change given how many Pokemon we have now. Like OP I liked being able to switch around my party with ease in XY and ORAS.

I admit I have mixed feelings about the EXP Share overall the way it is though. It makes the game too easy, but it makes changing around from all your options a lot easier. I liked being able to easily swap between my Magnamite and Jolteon in ORAS for example. It made the game more fun for me.

That was a stupid design they let you walk up on Blue on that level. However you can fight him at any time before you've fought Brock, or choose not to fight him at all so there's no problem. By the time you've gotten to Brock, going through the forest and beating everyone, you'll easily be able to beat the rival.

No it doesn't. A hack of ORAS, Star Sapphire is super challenging. The game could easily be hard with the EXP Share but they just made the game so easy that you don't even need the EXP Share to win easily.

Its not that grinding is fun (it isn't).

The AI sucks so much balls that you need to be 5 to 10 levels below the enemy fot it to become a challenge.
And now the game offers you a way to be overleved too.

It's literally the second battle in the series, this isn't counting that the trainers in the Forest and Blue don't give you enough experience to take on Brock, or that the E4. Then there's Gen 2.

I turned exp share on at Wallace gym in ORAS because I was dead tired of that garbage game and wanted to rush through it, and I ended up being way too powerful for E4 to even come close to KOing one of my mons. You could say it was bad design, or maybe they did it on purpose since they gave you the option of whether or not to fight him so it's really not a problem if you can't beat him. Regardless, having the EXP Share of Gen 6 would not help you in beating him without grinding.

If you didn't want to rely on weakness like a pussy you probably had to grind for games like Plat or BW2 for Gym Leaders.

Also Gen 2 and HGSS is grinding hell. I only pass by on the skin of my teeth with Lance. Mamoswine is GOAT.

The trainers do not provide enough experience in certain situations unless you're just powerleveling one Pokemon, especially in Gen 2

I would never grind until I'm over leveled. If I found the trainers from the routes and gyms didn't give me enough I'd fuck around in the grass until I'm at least one level below or on equal footing with the leader's best Pokemon. It keeps the battles fun and interesting and keeps me strategizing.

For instance, in White I have no ice Pokemon, I only have Emboar, Simisage, Scrafty, Krookodile, Pawniard and Golurk, as those were the Pokemon I set out to use. Because of this I need to be comparable to Drayden's best to stand toe to toe with him.

Nah you can be underleveled with some strategy. Some status moves, some X items or something. You're also playing against someone with terrible AI who never switches. There is no reason to be on the same level as your opponent's in Pokemon once you've gotten far enough to get a bunch of items and pokemon.

Maybe I'm the only non casual here but I never even used the original EXP share because it felt lile cheating. Really the Geb 6 is EXP share is more convenient if anything but if you use the EXP share (regardless which one) you're a casual anyway.

Maybe I'm just so good at Pokemon that I don't notice the difference, but to me all Pokemon games are equally easy.

If the games required consistent grinding to beat that would be artificial difficulty. I disagree with OP anyway, there are places where you need to grind, like with your rival in gen 1 and in a few other places. But grinding has never been a large portion of the game, and the EXP share got rid of quite a bit of what was necessary.

I did this too. It was fun up until Iris, then I kind of almost got my shit kicked in. But it was fun. Using Eelektross and Chandelure was a good choice, and now Reuniclus is my favorite Gen V Pokemon. BW2 is a good ass game.

I don't know how anyone can complain about EXP share when Bonus EXP and lucky eggs are a thing. They are the things that overlevel you way more. And don't even get me startef on Rare Candy. But I hope none of you actually use Rare Candy.

How is that? The original EXP Share split up the EXP. So you're getting the same amount of EXP whether you use the share or not. Why is it worse using the EXP Share than simply having a pokemon out front then immediately switching it? The Gen 6 EXP Share on the other hand, gives you EXP out of nowhere, and turning it off gives you less EXP in total. Nothing like the original.

I find grinding really fun. Working for those levels, you know, until you're finally done and then you're like 'okay, time to charge against the enemy!'. I don't grind until I'm overleveled, I simply do it until I'm equally levelled so it's a fun challenge for neutral type match ups. Ideally you want to go for super effective moves, but that's subjective depending on your playstyle, really. It is true though that games have been easier lately, like White for example, no grinding is ever required, unless you forgot to catch a pokémon and have to backtrack. The only battles they bothered making hard are part of the second League challenge. It was a good choice, even if the difference with the first challenge is abyssal

I just barely finish every important battle I've had off the skin of my teeth. I'd say I've lost to at least 70% of them at least once, and it only took me a maximum of 3-4 tries until I won. The closer I was to losing, the greater the satisfaction. I didn't have to grind once.

People seem to forget that you keep the EXP you've earned after losing, so you can just keep tackling it until you win. Each time learning about the opponent's party and coming up with a different strategy.

I've honestly haven't had this much fun since BW2. I'm sure I've gotten better so I'm not comparing their difficulties, but man would it kill GF to have some interchangeable difficulty levels? Everyone's at a different skill level so having the option makes everyone happy.

I think the real biggest issue was the fact that you have access to so many different and typically late-game Pokémon that you could easily round out your team and cover all bases extremely quickly, by like the second or third badge.

Just one example is that in Gen 3 you can only find Bagon after most of the main game is over, and only by going way out of the normal routes to track it down by venturing deep into Meteor Falls. Gen 6 shits on this idea by basically handing you a Bagon in Route 7. Why should I have access to a pseudo legendary 2 badges into the game???

I'm replaying HG and people told me this, but until I got that delicious STAB Earthquake it was pretty useless.

It's got the HP but no defense to tank anything. And Ice Shard is good but not killing material.
