We don't know.
I believe they confirmed not all trials will involve a battle, but at the same time they didn't confirm how many trials there would be.
There might be 16 trials with 8 of them being boss battles, for example.

They will involve a battle with the Totem Pokemon. I highly doubt you'll battle any of the Captains, maybe during the postgame as a bonus. There are at least four Kahuna who you will battle. I honestly hope there will be more Kahuna but eh, it's heavily implied there's just one per island

Captains have type specialization as leaders. Totem Pokémon are said to be at the end of each trial, so the totem probably will be typed as the specialization of the captain.

I'm a fan of that rumour of 4 trials per island (Or mixed, the biggest island can have 6 while MeleMele 2 only) with 16 captains that can teach you the Z Moves. The other two will be teached by Lusamine and Guzma.

I'd bet money that Drampa will be a Totem Pokemon for the Dragon trial captain and Ninetales will be the Totem Pokemon for the Ice trial captain.

They haven't stated that you will fight them, and between the kahunas, the Totems, and the wild Pokémon you'll probably have to fight during the trials, that's a lot of battles in addition to the battles of the main plot.

It seems like Trials are a gimmicky event thing. Fetch Quest, Obstacle Course, Race, Time Trial, etc. The battle with the Totem Pokemon is more like traditional gym battles.

Trial Captains, however, are essentially Gym Leaders in all but name. They specialize in one type, have an area they preside over, and are required for the player to progress. I really wouldn't be surprised if the Captains can be battled too. Maybe not for anything like a Gym Badge but battled nonetheless.

Mallow is the Grass type Captain, Lurantis is a Grass type, and she's found in a location that looks extremely similar to where Lurantis is. It seems like a safe bet to assume Lurantis is Mallow's Totem Pokemon

Not the same anon, but Mallow is the Grass-type Trial Captain.
Totem Pokemon appear at the end of trials with their corresponding type.
They don't have to own the totems, they appear at the end of the trials, so Mallow is on Akala Island.

Just because it's a grass type totem Pokemon doesn't mean anything. There will be multiple Totem Pokemon on each island.

Well the trials are going to be tasks, so technically battling doesn't happen until you complete said task.

So it's basically Gym Leader sends you to a dungeon/sidequest to prove yourself worthy of battling them instead of the game bullshiting you about their facility being blocked off or something.

To a degree. They work a bit differently. The old formula was far less flexible. The new formula is a mix of Trials, Kahunas, and Totem Pokemon.

The totem we know of so far are

Water: Wishiwashi school form
>Grass:Lurantis (probably moon exclusive)
Normal: Gumshoos (Sun) Alolan Raticate (Moon)

And we know for sure there are going to be a fire totem and an electric totem as well.

Of course we'd battle the trial captains? What would be the point in having them? They have types that they specialize in and they have their own designs, if we didn't have the opportunity to battle them, they would've just made random trainers as the captains.
