I think generally having more filters would be useful.
Shininess, potential (IVs), abilities, moves etc.
I remember getting about twenty Snivy that claimed to be 5IV HA before I got one that actually had Contrary.

I know hard mode is always a popular idea, but I always wish they'd do it by giving every trainer teams that are near competitive level, like the Maison. Keeping the level curves as they are, and maybe making all damage healed between matches. As it is, just increasing the levels means you have to grind more or at least run back to the Pokémon Center every few fights.
