But Drake also has either both a Shelgon and Salamence or two Flygon (in R/S even both) too. I'm personally not a fan when important trainers use two Pokémon of the same line unless it happens to be Vileplume and Bellossom or something.

The problem is that they decided to give the gym leaders gen 3 pokemon only. While it worked for Sidney and Drake because gen 3 had a lot of dark and Dragon types there simply were not enough ice and ghost types to make a decent team.

Dragonair isn't flying. And "Dragon" is kind of loose, if it can learn a dragon type move, that has usually been enough to count.

In GSC, yes, all of his pokemon were part Flying.
But he also has Kingdra sometimes too.

Why didn't they just introduce another ice-type line then?? It's not like they were averse to adding pokemon late into the development cycle, like Chimecho.

I think it would be really cool if gym leaders could be based off of certain stats or common strategies.

Like a gym leader that specialized in high defenses plus damaging status effects.

Or a gym leader whose pokemon all have moves that beat their pokemon's weaknesss.

The easiest solution for Glacia would have been placing her as an ice gym leader in Sootopolis city which looks like an ice gym anyway and having a water trainer a water type elite 4 in her place.

Serious question, has there been a single trainer at any point in any of the games that uses a Shedinja? It doesn't seem like the kind of thing they'd force a player to fight, it's the closest thing to artificial diffculty you can get

The games are for kids, it's not unreasonable to expect them to have one good Pokémon with little type variety and no status moves.

Still, if anything the lack of Dragon Types makes Lance even more fitting as the final boss/penultimate boss, since he has one of the more varied teams among bosses, even with 3 dragonites

almost, their gimmicks for most of them is they use an X Item at the start of the fight. But the all had only 1 pokemon.

The problem is that in the battle arena you had the "three turn battles and you get judged at the end" ruleset" and you could only bring three mons. If you didn't know she'd have a Shedinja and you didn't have a counter you were fucked.

Not ususual. Pokemon D+P made an effort to make sure every pokemon in the sinnoh dex was used by at least one trainer, since you need to have seen a pokemon in order to search for it on the Global Trade System.

Eh, it's still kinda gimmicky. I get what you're saying, but you're potentially using up a turn switching to a better-equipped Pokémon just to be able to touch your opponent at all - and every move counts. Four moveslots doesn't guarantee that you'll have one or more of Fire, Flying, Dark or Ghost moves, common though they may be.

Bringing status moves in the Arena was a waste 99% of the time though. Hyper offense was the best way to win and I just didn't have a pokemon with that coverage that was suited for the arena.

Dragon is justifiable; it's considered the "toughest" type and the real challenge in the game (shown by the fact you don't encounter Dragons until late game most of the time). But yeah, no Flying (an incredibly versatile type) and Electric (hit hard and fast) is bizarre.

Pick one.

The only Fire-types introduced in Gen. IV were the Chimchar line, Heatran, and Magmortar. Heatran was exclusively post-game, and you couldn't even FIND the Magby line in D/P without dual-slotting Leaf Green (again post-game). Ponyta was the only Fire-type you could find naturally in the wild.
