The complex has remained and grown into adult life as they keep up with the show. Though everyone will shit endlessly on Ash whenever he does something dumb or loses, deep down he's still their hero. Ash is what they wished to be, and since many of them lack any sort of romantic life, they desperately want him to get a girl and win, because then they can idolize him again.
It doesn't matter that the girl herself is presented as a character with its own goals and personality traits. In their mind, she is the poontang that Ash deserves. And the fact that the writers decided to throw them and shipfags as a whole a bone by having Serena be nothing more than a glorified shipping tool in the anime definitely doesn't help things.
