Considering Lt Surge's mention of a war he fought, is the Pokemon world actually darker than what it seems?

Why are you just now bringing this up? This series has been dark for a long time and keeps getting darker. Also Surge's mention of a war isn't even relevant considering all the references and even a backstory to a war last Gen where humans and Pokemon died.

Keep in mind gen 1 has references to America and India. This is because the translators didn't know/give a shit that Pokemon would become so huge, and their wasn't enough lore at the time.

Surge references war because he's supposed to be a generic American army vet and wears camo, even if the original dialog said something similar it's supposed to just be kind of camp/funny rather than serious lore

Remember how there are real fish in the Cerulean gym? even the creators didn't know if Pokemon should exist alongside real animals in the early days, whereas now I'm pretty sure that kind of shit doesn't happen.

What does Surge say in the Fired-red remakes? i'm guessing he doesn't mention war

What Pokemon would be useful in a war?

E.g: a saboteur or might want a Raticate because it can dig small inconspicuous holes, gnaw structures/bridges to weaken them, use it's hyper senses to detect enemies and perhaps sniff out mines. And obviously it's quite swift and dangerous

Yeah things like this, Steelix, Tyrannitar would be like huge front-line tanks, but they would attract all the fire-power.

I'm also thinking of more mundane Pokemon i guess. Would each soldier have access to one maybe two pokemon?

Generic grunt infantry Pokemon would presumably be Normal, Ground, Rock or maybe Steel

Psychic would be more like elite units you wouldn't see as much off.
