Example 1: If the classmate who is the 'Rival' is with you and you clear his 'BFF' route when you move to take out T-Rocket he may heroically choose to take on a 10v1 trainer battle to buy you time. Depending on trust level and the level of his pokemon (Which you can directly effect by involving him in your own battles.) he may actually win it too.
Example 2: If your Waifu is present with you for the elite 4 and you cleared her 'GF' route she'll be trying her hardest to cheer you on. This will rally the fuck out of your pokemon, especially your starter, and lead to a few possible random interactions. Like your Charizard having a chance of defying all logic and surviving with 1 hp through sheer force of will.

You can still access and finish all the side stories for your friends, but in this style of play through you alone weather the storm time and time again with your unrivaled superiority as a trainer. You both shock and awe your friends and foes a bit.
