So I want to give my gf her first pokemon game. I'd love to hear some opinions on what game it would be best for an absolute beginner to start.

She owns a 3ds, so anything from 4th gen up is good, including 2nd and 3rd gen remakes.

I have some ideas of my own, but i'd love to hear yours, so I'm asking for honest advice. Thanks in advance.

XY are fantastic starting points for a beginner. They introduce you to a wide array of Pokemon within the region and show you all of the mechanics. Otherwise, I'd say HGSS just because.

Even though I'm not a big gen 6 fan XY might be the best starting point since it'll introduce her to a lot of mons and is pretty easy.

Start with X or Y. It's perfect for beginners and got a lot of new people in. She also won't be confused a out new stuff like Fairy Type in Sun/Moon if you wanna play together and the customization and Amie and all other side stuff generally appeals to girls more so even if she doesn't like the barebones Pokemon gameplay she has other stuff to do.

I got my girlfriend started with Y, too after she got caught in the Pokemon Go craze and she loves it.

Also, of course, I'll get us a Sun/Moon set so we can play together, but XY has some cringeworthy things in the story, like shipping characters and forcing friendships. Sun/Moon will have this grooming thing, parapara dancing to Z moves... I will play it regardless, but I'm just thinking if it'd be the best choice for someone starting to play.

I think so too, many things are much easier. Exp when catching pokemon, exp share is now OP. breeding is easier, finding good IVs, EV training. This is all pampering the player too much, but they're good points compared to all the horrible grinding anyone in the past would have to do if not using save editors.

Eh, I think XY really tried to appeal to the girl crowd more. The things you might find cringeworthy she might find rather cute. Also does Shauna still have a crush on you if you play as the girl?

I just started my girlfriend out last month. She had passing knowledge of the series, mostly from Go, so I started her off on LG so that she could get used to the base mechanics and use characters she already knows. After she beat the E4 and got bored with the Sevii Islands, I started her on Y, which she loves. She's about to fight yveltal as of last night. I showed her Blue, which I have been playing, and she admitted she would have been turned off by the graphics, and she said that if she'd started with Y she would have been lost with all the useless features (pokemonamie, super training, o powers, etc).

My girlfriend is probably more of a normie than yours, who seems like she might have a stronger grasp of game concepts in general, and thus might be able to go for XY a little sooner.

Thank you for sharing. And now you'll be able to play sun/moon together.

1st gen would be amazing for her, but the grinding... It's so slow... Some character designs are unpleasant to see. So fr/lg would be good, but she'd enjoy more if she played in the console.

She doesn't mind old or new graphics, but 1st gen can be weird.

I think I'll surprise her with a sixth gen, then. And explain her to cut out the amie and o power for later.

You can try what I did and emulate FRLG, RSE on the phone. Me and my gf just got into the whole Pokemon craze thanks to Go and I proposed to try the phone emulator and she loves it.
I also got her a new N3DS for half the price from my local version of Ebay for her bday so we can play SM in Nov.
