Now you have to understand the GF is always going to pander to japanese children. Japanese children like fan service (go to any japanese school and watch them for a while, btw I am a teacher in japan). They draw porn together at tables, boys AND girls. So seeing waifu pokemon isn't made for adults at all, well sure anyone can enjoy it, but they are still pandering to the children of japan.
Something else to note is that, they are of the smartphone generation and NOT american. What I mean by this, is that they like hand holding, and games that aren't hard. Even adults in japan prefer a good story over a hard game, it's just how they are.
So all in all GF is doing a damn good job making good games for the japanese audience, this is a fact. But we are now seeing that westerners prefer harder games (even our children). It was like this before, but the contrast is now becoming more obvious with such a globally known franchise. The mainline games are now drifting off into becoming a more japanese friendly game. And they are digging it 100%
