There was a super easy way for them to make the fossil not look absolutely retarded, and that would have been to embed it in a slab of rock. Then they could have made an impression of the fins down it's neck. Or put a sign up next to it, or add a fabric recreation of the fins, or whatever.
I guess it doesn't matter.
