I think they will stick with 3-year gens now. It's enough for a Generation to feel whole, while still keeping interest by introducing new things at a quicker pace.
To compensate, we'll get smaller amounts of new Pokémon, and a stronger focus on new forms instead, because otherwise the shorter gens would cause the Dex numbers to skyrocket. Mega's and Alola forms exist for this very reason.
Personally, I like the way the Gens and new Pokemon are, I just wish the forms/megas would be fore more than just Gen 1/Legendaries.
