Your friend is a moron who didn't look for the info to back up his facts. Planning for Digimon began in 1996, and it first became available on June 26th, 1997. Planning for Pokémon began in 1989/1990, and it was ready to hit the Japanese market on December 21st, 1995, but Game Freak missed the shipping window, so Pokémon was first released February 27th, 1996 (though the copyright info at the start of the game still says 1995).
