They're either admitting there's absolutely no continuity, which spits in the face of a lot of evidence indicating otherwise, or they're implying he's been on several journeys, fought his way through multiple league challenges, and traveled to multiple regions in under a year. It's just silly. Making him 11 wouldn't make him suddenly any less relateable or something,

It has continuity when it wants, like in Best Wishes when Charizard comes back there's flashbacks from events of the first season, but others 90% of the time Ash acts like he has never seen some pokemon before.
Also, his personality certainly changes from season to season.

Why make him 11 if nothing will change?
Show will run for 20 more years, there is just no point to make him 11 or 12. What would it accomplish? Continuity is pretty much dissapearing. You can't keep continuity for so much time.

He's not 10 though. During the Kanto series he specially said "It's been a whole year since we've been in Viridian City", so he has aged to at least 11 by now

At least they are seen growing up and aging in some episodes (for example Barthood) before returning to their original age in the following episodes. There are even some "what-if" moments (like Bart experimenting a Buzz Cola) that at least seem to show older characters.

And this is why digimon (at least the anime) is better, the story was more engaging and instead of making all the protagonists all the same through the seasons, they changed everything for a new breath of life.

It allowed each character to have a conclusive beginning, middle and ending.

I remember when digimon used to have cartoony humans while pokemon had more ""realistic"" humans, seems like the things changed now.

in bw it says he's 10, and people take that as a fact, but when any other passage of time is mentioned anywhere else people just brush it off
he's spent at least a year in each region, as seen in an undubbed sinnoh recap episode where they reflect on the past in-universe year of events, and near the end of hoenn he says how much he's liked spending "all these months" together

I never watched the Orange Islands as a kid, started watching with Johto.
Can't believe how much I enjoy it.
There's genuinely funny moments and the characters actually have character.
