Except they did. Best selling 3ds game of all time with 15 million copies in fact. BW sold 16 million copies in comparison and XY's lifespan isn't even over yet. I think the only reason GF didn't make Z is because it was too much of an obvious choice. Same reason they didn't make a Gray version.

They didn't make Gray because Nintendo lost their shit when they said they were doing that instead of a new gen on 3DS. Nintendo only grudgingly let them do BW2 because GameFreak begged and said it would totally not be a rehash and they'd start working on XY right away. This was in an interview posted on Pokebeach I think before XY were released.
