I'll give a more moderate opinion.
The BW anime tried out a lot of unique, interesting ideas. Unfortunately, most of them failed, some because of factors outside of the writers control (the earthquake that derailed the early Plasma arc, that strange pacing that seems to have been caused by the game release schedule), and some that the writers simply dropped the ball on (the shitty handling of the rivals, for example). In the end, the BW anime was pretty bad, but I give it credit for trying to do things differently than what had come before. It's a shame that most of those new ideas failed in the execution.
