I wish Pokemon, or a game like Pokemon would focus a little more on taking care of and interacting with your Mons. Even in HG and SS, I loved having my favorite Pokemon follow behind me and being able to turn around and check up on them.

Dragon quest monsters is fun for the first few hours, but after that it becomes an immensely grindy repetitive game because to get the stronger monsters you need to make long ass breeding chains composed by other breeding chains.

People shit on pokémon all day but honestly I think it did the monster catching mechanic better than anyone else, that's what comes to my mind everytime I play another monster catching game.

I gave Digimon a try with Cyber Sluts, but am not convinced. I might give it another try later, but I also might not. I've considered DQM before, but never got around to it.
Not really a monster catching game, but Disgaea can hit a couple of the right buttons when I use mostly monster units.

Monster Rancher had a great anime and great games.

Neopets was also a cool virtual pet "game" of my childhood.

Playing now, I agree.
Having to breed, retrain and rebreed takes time, and you're not even guaranteed the result will be a better monster unless you look it up online.

Pokemon does progression well.

I just like I can pick up and play pokemon. I don't even like the monster collecting aspect of it, I just pick a team and like to train those. Mods are great for that too.

Rolling dice isn't really my favorite hobby.

I like Digimon a lot, the first Digimon World is still my favorite game
DQMonsters, Medabots, Fossil Fighters and Sumoners Wars are also cool

Only YW2 right now. I really wish this niche was explored more, too many devs are scared to make monster collecting games in fear of them being branded "Pokemon knock-offs" (Despite shit like SMT predating Pokemon)

Digimon (specifically World 2, DS, Dawn/Dusk, Cyber Sleuth come to mind with monster catching) and Monster Rancher series come to mind. Also liked Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker.

I do like any game that makes me feel like a beastmaster. Even simple shit like Hunter in WoW satisfies that urge of being a commander of monsters and befriending them while also turning them into powerhouses. Dragonseeds and Azure Dreams for the PS1 come to mind and have their own little twist.

I honestly can't find enough games that let me do stuff like that.

I felt the pacing was terrible though, took ages to progress in that game. Also catching specific monsters when they join you at random was almost physically painful, I must've spent hours in some of those areas.

You actually made me think of myself, I was learning game programming a while back and I wanted to make a monster catching game but I gave up because everybody would compare it to Pokemon and as a one-man project it would obviously be inferior.
