Did the writers think introducing a girl with a canon crush on Ash, teasing it for 3 years, and then just dropping it like every other girl was a good idea?

I mean why bother to have Serena with a crush in the first place then? She could have been written similar to May and Dawn and just have a strong friendship with Ash. I don't believe the whole "France" connection is the only reason they did it.

I don't get it. What was the point?

I think they intended to form a relationship between the two, and even potentially retire Ash, dare I say. But plans changed.

Kalos being France, the country of love, could have been a cushion in case plans changed, because then they could just call the whole love-thing a regional gimmick and move on.

Both DP and XY were written as if they could have been Ash's final sagas, but then backtracked on the idea just to reboot him.

Its also probably why OS, AG and DP all feel like one long continuous series. Now every saga just feels stand-alone.

Executive meddling isn't exactly new to Japanese's kids shows.
Yugioh 5Ds' issues were probably one of the most notable examples of executives fucking over otherwise fairly competent screenplay writers' plans.

That would've actually been a good way of doing it.
Shit, when it transforms in-game, you even see a flash of the Mega Evolution light underneath the water. They were THAT close to doing it.

Nothing, there is no point. Ash vs Alain is something you could compare to Cyrus plan. From our view Cyrus is batshit insane and his plan would never work but by Pokemon standards its god damn brilliant because he had everything to make it possible. Now look at Ash vs Alain. From our view Ash should've won but in their world Ash had a full 6 vs 6 battle against a challenging and worthy opponent and though he lost it just means he needs get stronger so it wont happen next time they battle. From his view every league lost is another lesson but from our view its a fucking waste of time. Just be glad it was a decent final battle and not some bullshit like Alains Charizard sweeping Ash team ala Darkrai.

The SM anime looks to be properly aimed at kids again, though.

People like me who loved the Serena romance subplot just have to deal.

5Ds was originally written with a specific number of episodes and clear character and plot developments in mind since it was supposed to be a relatively short follow-up to the GX series ending after 150+ episodes.

Part way through they were told to change it to accommodate for adding more episodes than was originally planned for, so they couldn't end the series how they intended. Most of what followed from this point ended up being pretty terrible as a result.

It's more or less a similar situation here, except that you kinda knew in advance that Pokemon would be doomed to continue in this manner forever.

5Ds was heavily influenced by the cardgame business. The plot was shifted constantly to accomodate it. Example is Crow, whose Blackwing cards got so popular that he became a main protagonist instead of the villain of Dark Signer arc (notice Wiracocha Razca, the final Earthbound was the bird nazca line).

At least konami learned off of that in ZeXaL. Yes, I know, zexal has its issues, but I actually enjoyed it more than 5D's and it was more popular in Japan than the former.

Problem is, Pokemon producers don't learn off with time. They don't know how to adapt and keep repeating the same formula over and over. Ash became anime Sysyphus AND anime Peter Pan. Forever a child in wonderland, doomed to push a rock that will always fall
