Ditto won't be available that early in the game and not everyone has that easy internet access.

The GTS made distributing them easier, yeah, but even before it people existed. What was stopping someone from giving their friends all starters if not making females rare?

The same logic applies to Eevee, for example, which is either a rare or a gift mon most of the time. But I guess I'm wrong and they gave such a strong bias towards male versions of them because why the fuck not I guess

Yeah, being of an "uncommon" rarity at worst in every current-gen game is hard as shit to find.

Nothing stopped people from passing out their starters. If your friend had a Ditto you were golden. I guess if you had no friends you were fucked but the GTS has made it a non-issue.
