This gen is just a mess. I've lost all faith in it.
Hopefully the battle mechanics are tight so we can at least use every Mega and dumb shit like sneaky stones and weather don't dominate the meta to the point of spoiling it.

The thing with the previous birdsong though is that they flowed into their final evo designs quite fluidly despite the species difference.

Here, the damn toucan just comes out of nowhere. Pikipek's 2nd evo doesn't even give an indication of the direction it's about to enter.

Yes, but the base form and final form share enough similarities that you could see it as a natural progression.

How about the fact that their beak is the clear focus of this line since its reveal and the beak very obviously grows in absurd lengths.

Again, for the brain-damaged like yourself: the beak is the focus of this line, so they had it evolve into a bird known for their absurdly long beaks, "natural progression" be damned.

Its not a 180. If you look at their toes you will see that they have two forward and two backward. This is a concerted group within avian evolution. The group that has toucans and the group that has woodpeckers are sister taxa, meaning they are the closest to each other. I am still disappointed because I wanted it to be a woodpecker all the way through as it is my favorite group of birds.
