so all of my DS games got stolen, and I wanted to play ol' Heart Gold the other day (then remember my games were stolen)

I was going to buy it again but this shit is like 80$. I've noticed some chinese knock offs on eBay? Are they worth a damn? Also are there like rom hacks for GBA versions of G/S/C?

Just emulate them. It's 2016, any computer or computer -like device with Drastic/Desmume can emulate HGSS with zero issues these days

Be careful buying the Chinese knockoffs (usually $15-30). Most of them work fine with the only problem being you can't communicate with legit game copies, but some have a constant freezing/black screen problem.

As for flashcarts HGSS had piracy protection on them which causes your game to black screen about when you get up to Goldenrod city. Depending on the flashcart model the firmware can disable it, though many aren't in production anymore and some don't work on things later than DS-Lite

VBA-M for anything GBA-GB
DeSMuMe for any DS games
Dolphin for Colo/XD
Citra for 3DS (only works decently with ORAS and flawlessly with the SM demo)

R4 is probably the best option for now, and not that I hate Go's popularity but... Holy shit, about a month ago when I was looking for SMT IV:A all the Pokemon games were 2 to 3 times more expensive, specially HGSS, even without the Pokewalker it was outrageously costly.

There's no alternative for most emulators.
VBA - Unless you enjoy malware, VBA does everything even joybus emulation.
DeSMuMe - unless you really want 40 FPS emulation on No$
Dolphin - No other emulator
Citra - No other emulator.

BGB or Gambatte. BGB has more options but Gambatte is multiplat. both are superior to VBA in terms of accuracy and, in BGB's case, options

mGBA is the best out there. more features than the aging VBA-M and more importantly excellent accuracy. VBA-M is chock full of shitty speed hacks and isn't maintained much anymore

Graphical glitches are usually the fault of the emulator or try using SoftRasterizer in the 3D settings but if you suspect the glitch to be caused by AP you can apply Rudolph's Child's Play Patch via the DS Rom Scene tool (although all torrented/DDL'd HGSS roms are probably patched by now and the patch might be behind some of the problems.)

I can't really tell what causes the problem. Research usually turns up random codes you're supposed to enter that stop the game from crashing. Sometimes it blacks out after a transition event or just makes the character a jumbled pixel mess. I'll try the SoftRasterizer setting and see if that works. The rom I'm using was prepatched. Still having the same issues as the ones from mainstream sites.

The Antipiracy issue is a seperate one from the blackscreening from what I can discern.

If you were around back in the AP days... Well.

The three cardinal signs of an AP issue were these:
>Blackscreens meant you couldn't load the game past the title screen (in No$ only, it didn't affect DeSMuMe)
>Freezes meant that you simply couldn't move anywhere and you lost progress
>EXP freeze meant that you couldn't gain any EXP AT ALL
>Freezes occurred exactly once every twenty minutes (or was it 30?)

The current DeSMuMe come HGSS problem is this:
>excess use of save states will result in a black upper screen and a working lower screen
>some parts of the move graphics won't display
The black screen is entirely 'solved' by saving in game normally and reloading.

So my upper screen blackouts with functioning lower screen and random box glitching around my still controllable character are resulting from me over using the save states? I also save in game but have been using excessive save states as well. This would definitely explain a lot.

I think save states hurries the process along but might not be the cause. The problem seems to affect all emulators derived from DeSMuMe for example I noticed it in iNDS. Anyway, you can just save using the functional lower screen and reopen the emulator and no more black screen.

I really didn't remember it occuring in any other pokemon game.
