They weren't that bad. If you came across an obstacle, you just had to go and catch something that could learn an HM. Most of the HM moves were alright for ingame teams anyway.

You get an invincibility period, so there's that reason. It's also one of the higher BP flying moves readily available. Not like Fly has ever been necessary.

I never had a problem with them, they were just a part of the game. Recent gens, 4 excluded, were okay because you hardly ever had to use anything but Surf and the occasional Strength.

I personally am not the biggest fan of the pager system, I think that Pokemon should have just had over world only HM abilities made available to them once they hit a certain level, but regardless of how it happened, HM's are gone and thank fuck for it

I love the kill of HMs, but it really feels off. I'd rather let the player choose something they have caught as the designated user of a NotHM, and giving them some sort of miniature PC so they can call those mons whenever they need them in case they aren't in your party already.

HMs being removed was a nice change.

But yes, why the fuck couldn't they just have every large Pokemon carry you on their back so that your own pokemon could be used as the rides? Seems like Gamefreak was just being lazy.

What's special about either type? The only regional bird that wasn't a complete drag on in-game play was Staraptor, and even that was literally due to it getting Close Combat. It's not like fire and rock types have been especially prominent in the games outside the first gym either, they're just another type
