>>29291190I think Gamefreak tried to do something similar for Gen 6 but it didn't work out. They had the war and the the nuke but the backstory with the king and the 3000 year old giant just made reading into anything a slog to get through. Everything felt too fantastical. The "horror" of Gen 6 was immediately obvious whereas in Gen I it was a lot more subtle as you said.
I feel like Gen 7 is shaping up to be similar to Gen 1.
You have Pokemon based on things with grim histories like Rockruff being a Hawaiian Poi Dog (poi dogs were raised as a food source for humans) and potentially Persian (current theory it's based off a cat breed that's horribly inbred and winds up deformed, kind of like white tigers and pug dogs in real life).
You also have Type: Null being a chimera. It was probably created just to fight and no one who 'worked' on it gave a shit about it. It's a thing, not a Pokemon. It doesn't even deserve a name. It's a bit like Mewtwo just being called "Mew 2" like it's an experiment.
Plus, it's obviously based off of Arceus. So now we have a bunch of scientists trying to create a new God by fusing Pokemon together. Are the Pokemon killed and then bits from them are sewed together? Or is Type: Null some kind of thing that just absorbs other Pokemon? I really doubt the game will go into this in depth so the players are left to fill in the gaps.
I haven't read the newest leaks yet (the ones with the dialogue) but it seems like the UBs are weird manmade Pokemon fused with humans or something. That's pretty atrocious too when you start thinking about it.
so yeah, I disagree with you that games are trying to become more wholesome. They definitely seem to be going back to humans fucking things up in the Pokemon world rather. I do agree that Gen 1 had a slight edge not really seen in the other generations (except for potentially Gen 5 and Gen 6 as I mentioned)
