Pele's hair is a form of lava. It is named after Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes.

Pele's hair has a golden yellow color and looks like human hair. It also looks like straw. In sunlight, it has a shimmering gold color. The lengths can vary a lot, but it has an average of 2 to 6 inch length

Hell I didn't even need a reason beyond they wanted to make something look humorous. I can accept there being some Pokemon who exist solely for a gag. The pun at play here now that I know it is adorable though.

Wow anon you're so cool and detached, it's almost like you're trying as hard as any edgefag while thinking yourself superior for it.

The "not serious business" argument is inherently flawed because the person presenting it clearly cares enough to get in heated discussions over the subject, rather than just leaving and enjoying the thing they proclaim to like so much, clearly they take it a lot more serious than they pretend not to.
