Alolan Dugtrio was revealed. At first people were confused, and the same goes for me, but despite many complains I liked this little goofy mole, it was a funny design in my opinion.
Then the moment that changed everything: Alolan Dugtrio was revealed to be based off Pele's Hair, meaning the Pokémon would very likely be a Ground/Fire type. My excitement quickly turned into terror to this sudden realization.
Let's take a few steps back to explain my reaction. Let's go back to Gen 4. During this generation, a new popular defensive core was born: the Grass/Fire/Water core. It was a revolutionary core that would change everything we know about stall and balance teams. So good it was often deemed necessary, even.
Let's look at Alolan Dugtrio now. It is a Ground/Fire Pokémon, likely with Arena Trap... Normal Dugtrio is already wrecking havoc everywhere with its powerful ability. With its new typing, it could ruin this powerful core forever. On its own, Dugtrio can now take care of both Fire and Grass enemies, all it takes is for a Volt Switch or U-Turn from popular enemies like Scizor and Rotom-W, no risk, no difficulty, no skill involved... and bam, your core is gone. Using Mega Venusaur as your Grass core overcentralizes the meta and forces you to always use that one Mega in your team, and as we all saw with Gothitelle, Shed Shell on everything is just not an option. We NEED Leftovers to maximize the efficiency of our core. Us competitive players will not accept that compromise. It's like playing with no items if the enemy doesn't have a Dugtrio. After all it's Dugtrio the problem, or rather Arena Trap, and that's why it's DUGTRIO that should go.
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it won't be that type, or not have Arena Trap. But I'm just scared. It took 2 years for people to realize how unhealthy and unfair Gothitelle was for the meta. I just want to raise awareness. We cannot commit the same mistake twice. If my fears come true, we must get rid of Dugtrio as fast as possible.
