My main problem with sun doge is that it "just gets bigger". I can't see why so many people have it as one of their favorites

There's a difference between "repetition of design" and "building upon a design"

For example, alolan muk looks mostly like a bigger grimer, but expands on grimer's yellow streak by adding more colors

Something like lycanroc just looks like a grown up rockruff

Because they liked Rockruff, and therefore prefer the evolution that is more like Rockruff? The night version is clearly more of a werewolf than a dog, the sun version is still a dog even if it is more wolf-like than before. Some people like dogs more than werewolves.
