The idea is that depending on the speed category, the turn can go one of two ways. If Shuckle is faster...
1. Mega Shuckle
2. Opponent
Or if Shuckle is slower...
1. Opponent.
2. Mega Shuckle
In the event of the former, the Shuckle turns into its offense mode and then attacks. If it does not succeed in knocking out the opponent, it is then going to take a direct hit from them while in its offense mode, which means its defenses will be very low and it is likely to be knocked out. However, in the latter, Shuckle takes the hit while in defense mode, and thus takes a very small amount of damage, and then turns into offense mode to land its attack. In the former you have a chance to not take any damage at all if you beat them in one hit, but you also risk being knocked out yourself. In the latter you guarantee a hit landing on you, but your defenses will be far higher, making it a safer bet.
Then, next turn, you use Protect to return to defense mode, which will (likely) happen due to the increased priority.
