Why is having a large regional dex such a big deal?

I mean if you can't make a team with Alola's pokedex you still have 721 other pokemon to choose from so what's the problem?

The Dex is not the problem, but the distribution. Potential Problems:

1) Good Mons come too late, either by placement or evolution (Johto, Unova)

2) Too much old and the new gets overshadowed (Kalos)

3) skewed to hard to a particular generation (Kalos, Alola)

4) Too small (Kanto)

5) Too large for the region (Kalos)

6) Poor type distribution (Sinnoh)

7) Some Mons are in too many places (Hoenn, Johto)

Etc. You get the idea

Because Kalos making you wade through 40 old mons just to get to a new one wasn't fun. And it's especially retarded to have all of the Kanto over representation when RBY can transfer over, making it unnecessary (and crowding out mons from other gens).

People want to use new Pokemon, and having access to a wide variety of them can feel better than having a bunch of oldmons overshadowing the new, like in Kalos.

Sinnoh is a great example of the preferred new-gen regional dex. Lots and lots of new mons, with just enough returning ones to suffice.

The problem is that new Pokemon aren't as good nowadays, so they give you old Pokemon to cushion the criticism.

Also I don't think they wanna break 1000.

I agree that a huge amount of old mons can overshadow the newer ones. Still it seems that over 70 news pokemon i just not enough for some people in /vp/

I mean for some of us the fun is finding 6 Pokemon we want to use and carry them through the game. Catching Pokemon you don't intend to play with isn't everyone's ideal of fun. That's the great thing about Pokemon though, there's something almost everyone can enjoy in it.
