From all evidence, Totem intros are small cutscenes, not a cut-in with the dex sprite sliding in. There's also the fact that the kanto rats DO have gender differences, and it would make sense that a small handful of pokemon would still get some.
All that said, I'm banking on the Vikavolt not being a gender difference, but a form of some kind. The description constantly talks about it holding a Charjabug underneath it, so I'm hoping for something like that.
