Literally no trailer shows it as a totem. They just show it attacking the player during a trial. As the demo showed, non-totem pokemon can still attack you as part of a trial.

I can't find it at this moment, but I do recall it showing a Totem Wishiwashi in the context of Island Trials. Even Bulbapedia lists it and they're always in denial about everything, as long as it's not blatantly thrown into their faces.

Wishiwashi Totem is a permanent School Form. It starts the battle as a School, unlike normal Wishiwashi where you see the ability activate at the start of battle.

The reason there's no wishiwashi one is because totems are just bigger super saiyan versions of the normal pokemon.

Wishiwashi's school form is so big already that making it bigger just doesn't work, so they just threw the super saiyan aura on the base model and called it a day.

Honestly, it was a cutscene. We can't know for certain yet that its an opening for the totem battle. I would love for it to be a battle, but just showing it flying at us cant be grounds for it being an actual battle. Maybe the tapu of the island comes and protects us from it in some way and thats how we meet the tapu of the island?

Yes, it appears to be a Totem cutscene, but it's not confirmed. It's pretty much confirmed, but not 100% confirmed. Logic.

It's also been theorized that the Wishiwashi we see in the trailers that attacks you isn't a totem per se (it's a bit weird that Lana specifically tells you that there's a powerful Pokemon to fight when by this point the player should already know how totems work).

The explanation for Wishiwashi is either

Also, considering that they're indeed Totems and Wishiwashi isn't included for whatever reason:

Raticate & Gumshoos = Ilima
Vikavolt = Sophocles
Lurantis = Mallow
Salandit evo = Kiawe
Mimikyu = Ghost girl from the trailer
Jangmo'o = Kukui's demo-only trial

So, there are only six Trial Captains?

There could be other totems like Wishiwashi, that are already big enough to not need a new model. I could see Bewear and Mudsdale working as totems with their regular size, for example. Or not every trial has a corresponding totem.

Um yes there wpuld be. They're placeholders for the totems who won't be in the dex forms.

They're also side by side with their regular forms. There's no other pokemon to be found says data miners.

They also found totem zygarde text. So a even bigger one is coming. You can't use the cell and cores as pokemon in battle. They're items.
