Yeah.
They weren't usable items after HGSS. They are now.
Dreams balls and safari balls stayed usable after BW though, so that doesn't mean they're coming back.

Why bring them back if they weren't going to be used? I'd understand if they were ported in from another game and gf forgot to remove them, but they weren't usable in XY or ORAS.

Cherish balls were always usable items.
Apricorn balls straight up were unusable after HGSS.
But they're usable again.

More then likely, it's just there for any Pokémon transferred from HGSS, for their release animations, and ENGINE LIMITATIONS required both animations to prevent crashes.

They exist in Gen 5/6 for the sake of transferring HG/SS pokes up, they just can't be used like regular Pokeballs. Even if you hack them into the bag you can't do anything with them.

The fact that they are now usable items with animations means that maybe they are returning for real this time, but it's definitely not a certainty.

You can't obtain them normally, but you can hack a cherish ball into DPP and use them to catch pokemon.

I hope they are because Dream Balls are pretty much the best pokeballs.

I'm disturbed that there are no sport balls though, I hope they're at least present and don't get reverted to safari or normal pokeballs. My sport ball Scizor's market value would plummet.

You're missing the fucking point, bro. Open a gen 5/6 save file in an editor and add a Cherish Ball to your bag. It works fine.

Add an Apricorn Ball. It doesn't do shit. They don't function as usable items whatsoever, they're just a sprite for HG/SS Pokes that have been transferred up and nothing else.

Fast forward to Gen 7. Apricorn Balls are now USABLE ITEMS once again with ANIMATIONS to accompany them. Work the rest out in your head.

But if you get a Huge Power Rayquaza, you can use that Rayquaza. If you get Cherish Balls, you can use Cherish balls. In gen V-VI if you hack and put Apricorn balls into your bag, they are unusable. That's the point that the anon is making dipshit. Cherish Balls have always been programmed to be something you can use, Apricorn balls have not.

Just because the code for them is in the game, doesn't mean they're usable.

Safari Balls have pretty much been retired.

Cherish and Dream Balls are never given to the player.

Okay, so maybe they won't be an item you can acquire and legally use in-game. However, they are FUNCTIONAL unlike gen 5 and gen 6 where they were just a dummy item if hacked into the bag. At the very least, this seems to imply a chance that they'll be obtainable and usable in Sun and Moon.
