Gyms were getting old anyway. The gym puzzles were beyond easy and the battles never posed an actual challenge.

The most fun I ever had in a pokemon game was coloseum. Change is good. If you want gyms there's like 10+ games that exist already to do just that.

Oh yeah because running around an area and solving some simple puzzle then battling a pokemon with a negligible stat boost and one weak ally instead of a gym leader with more pokémon is such a better challenge.

Change is good, but it's pointless if it's a change to the worst. Sun/Moon is shit.

Trials are literally just gyms with a different name and act more like traditional ROG bosses. I do hope one day we have a non-linear progression system where you choose which gym/trail you do first and have them change levels/teams up depending on if you choose it 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ect.

Just because it was a poorly executed concept as of late doesn't mean it had to be scrapped. Plus it's not a change for the better as the totem battles and trials that serve as a replacement do not provide any distinction in terms of enjoyment compared to just any regular battle.

Well actually for the trials it isn't so much a battle as it's more of a quest feature. Somehow they managed to make the game even more childish than it was already.

Yeah that sucks. Gym battles weren't exactly challenging but at least you were battling instead of just doing some simple quest.

I think in the end what will make or break Sun/Moon for me will be how much I like the setting, characters and story. And that's apparently what GF is going for anyway since they keep talking about it being a bit more story driven this time around.

I don't think it will be as bad as XY or ORAS. I'm fairly optimistic from the demo that the game will at least have a comfy atmosphere and immersive world, which both of the previous games lacked, no clue about endgame though, which is unsettling.

The first thread about it cleared up a lot of doubts about these battles after the demo.

The demo nerfed everything and probably buffed Greninja too.

It wasn't indicative of the actual game's potential.

We've done gyms over 50 times

They're not even that amazing, it's just fighting a slightly harder trainers but in a building so you can move on to the next town

Also theres still the four Kahunas you fight on each island, it's more like they halved the amount of gym leaders rather than removed them

That's assuming you don't battle some/all trial captains

Since the trial captains are type specialists I feel like they wouldn't not give you battles against them, even if it's just post game matches or as them appearing in some battle facility. I mean it would be too much of a waste to not battle them at least once.

We'll at least battle Kiawe since his bio specifically mentions a battle.

The other quests will likely still include fighting to some degree.

Iliam's for example doubles up with a Team Skull event. So you're fighting them as you're fighting the wild Pokemon you need to look for.
