It would probably be as mediocre as RG, GS, RS, DP, BW, and XY are, and likely as mediocre as SM will be.

It's only because they're working off an existing base and can look back on flaws that third versions and sequels are good.

BW2 sold fine. People treat it like it should've sold as well as a remake or new generation when it's really a glorified third version and was treated as such.

It was the worst selling main series game but it it did far from poorly. Part of the reason it sold so poorly was because the 3DS had been out for 2-3 years by that point and people just wanted their fucking Pokemon in 3D already, so a lot of people skipped it. That said a lot of people still bought it too so it didn't perform badly by any means. It was never going to sell as much as the start of a new generation or remakes would, even Gamefreak knows that.

Unno or Morimoto would be fine. They have a basic poke-formula to work off of. Both would excel at a new fun gimmick or side quest to add some diversity. Really, they just need time, the games production schedule is a bit too quick now. The fans have a robust community that is pretty good at keeping itself busy. I mean, we're the only video game franchise that has it's own board and we still put threads on /v/.
