If a normal DS can handle this perfectly, then why can't the 3DS handle SM at all? I want to be hyped for these games, and I am, but I'm starting to worry they pulled an ORAS.

Because gamefreak went overboard on the polygons for gen 6 and 7. That's why we have little to no 3D.
