So I know that the pokebank won't be available for sun and moon until January. But what about GTS? Will we be able to trade our old pokemon over that way, or are we fucked?

Why would you need GTS for that? All you need is another 3DS and directly trade with yourself.

I imagine the answer is S/M can't trade directly with the 6th gen, in order to prevent glitches caused by new pokemon and/or moves

Honestly hacks will more than likely let us get our pokemon to gen 7 before the bank ever does...hell pkhex will likely make it possible to send pokemon back to gen 6 too

I did hear that the guys at pkhex were using the demo to prepare the hack to work with the full version of SM when released, so there's a chance that you could use the pkhex bank to transfer old mons into the new game, and if not i'm pretty sure there's gonna be a way through hacks to spawn old pokemon that aren't in the alola dex, so yeah, you probably won't have to wait till next year, just a few days
