Other thread kinda died on this note, but how would you feel if there were different type triangles for starters?

Water/ground is one of the best defensive typing sin game, I can see this working.
Maybe not so much fire steel but it could work in some niche team

I always liked Fighting-Rock-Flying, just give Flying a secondary typing irrelevant to Rock and Fighting, like Electric or Dragon or something.

If it were up to me, the starters would be:
1. Fast mixed attacking pure Rock type that gets both Stone Edge and Power Gem. Ability should be Sturdy since it's a very noob-friendly ability that forgives bad play. Stats are similar to Infernape.
2. Fighting starter would be big and bulky with great attack, defense, and special defense, learns Drain Punch by level up when it hits 3rd stage. Stats would be like Throh's but better and with better movepool. Ability is Filter so you aren't hosed by early game bird routes quite as badly.
3. Flying/Electric starter is dedicated special attacker with decent speed, though not as fast and fragile as the rock starter. Stats are similar to Delphox. Ability is Serene Grace so your Thundershocks paralyze more often and your Air Slashes are obnoxious flinches.

How od these sound?

They had a chance to do exactly that with the X/Y starters but they were too retarded to either change it to Water/Psychic and Fire/Dark or Grass/Dark and Water/Fighting, instead they just made the traditional triangle even stronger. You could also do Fire/Fighting and Grass/Psychic if you really cared that much about muh Greninja, but everyone was already sick of Fire/Fighting by that point anyway

If we want to be pedantic about it Fighting/Flying/Rock is the only "perfect triangle" that doesn't use Fire (and therefore doesn't cut into GFW) and uses all physical types before the split. It would be the most fitting for an alternate starter trio.

you forget that secondary types could be used to supplement missing resistances if need be. the primary types alone might not have a reverse cycle of resistances, but the starter pokemon themselves still could.

None of those actually work though. The type triangle for starters has more then just "Be super effective to 1"
All the types are also resistant to themselves, and resistant to the thing they are good against. Its not just the offensive typings that matter, the defensive do as well.

Also all of them are neutral to Normal, the type that makes up the majority of NPC attacks, and all are resisted by Dragon, which acts as the "final boss" type and requires you to diversify.

Swampert doesn't resist Water, and is doubly weak to Grass while Blaziken and Sceptile take normal damage from Water and Fire, respectively

Torterra takes doesn't resist Water

Empoleon takes doesn't resist Fire and isn't even weak to Grass

Rowlet3 is doubly resistant to Grass but Popplio3 and Litten3 aren't to Water and Fire, respectively
