Oh I like how you're trying to reverse the whole "You weren't there!" thing back on him but it's not really working for you. For starters, experiencing the Pokemania doesn't mean a thing when it comes to the difficulty of the game unless you have ADHD and can't focus on anything.
And I stress "difficulty" seeing as you could be 10 levels under the lowest mon in the area and you could still steamroll with a terrible level up set like scratch, ember, growl and so on.
The only way you could feasibly lose to the extent you seem to say is if you went religiously by the strategy guide.
With that said, most kids in that day and age just soloed with the starter which just trivializes the entire game.
