I guess Sudowoodofags are pretending that the name is a portmanteau of pseudo and wood when it's actually just referring to Unix's sudo command, by that flimsy logic. Until we know what the etymologies used by TPCi for Pokemon names are, we can only make guesses. There is no pretending, only guesswork by recognizing wordplay. Talonflame is phonetically a combination of talon + (in)flame, unless you're a retard who pronounces the -on part incorrectly. Whether that's where the name actually came from or not can't be known unless TPCi says something.

Eye makes no sense beyond "hurr durr owls have big eyes." That's as dumb as claiming Magcargo is just magma + cargo while rejecting the escargot pun because Pokemon names can't use puns, and no one is that stupid. Then again, you're still clinging onto TALON + FLAME WORST NAME EVER so you might be. There's no reason for the -eye if it's not incorporating deadeye, which is not at all a reach when it's actually incorporated into the design. Whether or not the incorporation of deadeye was due to it being Ghost-type isn't as certain as the name incorporating deadeye because it's a long-ranged assassin.

And what do you think "Deciduous" means in this context? It's the yearly process in which trees "die" during the winter. It's very clearly supposed to be a grass/tree equivalent of deadeye.

Plus, the death theme in the name also gets bonus points considering it's a ghost type. Decidueye is one of the most clever Pokemon names I've seen.

It's not just that owls have big eyes, it's also that owls have fantastic vision, and the fact that the whole line has an eye motif.

Rowlet has good vision, but when it evolves into Dartrix its eyesight begins to fail, so it squints, and Decidueye has markings like eyeglasses, so it's finally gotten glasses to make up for its failing sight.

Why do you think the word "eye" is in the word "deadeye" then? It obviously has to do with having perfect aim to shoot anything down from any distance, something that one would need great eyesight for. So it's very much possible for both "eye" and "deadeye" to be the inspiration for the name.

And if all they wanted to bring attention to was its eyesight, then they could have easily done a "plant word+eye" pun as well.

But they didn't. They intentionally picked deciduous, specifically because of its association with trees going dormant. Then what you're left with is a plant-related word that invokes loss of vigor and life, and -eye. The inspiration is obvious, and I don't see why you're trying so hard to deny it, especially when deadeye is a synonym for a marksman, which is exactly what Decidueye is.

But nah, you must be right. There's NO way an archer owl could have an archer-based pun in its name.

No shit it's not actually dead, sherlock. "Deciduous" being a pseudo-synonym for "dead" in this case is primarily to make the "deadeye" joke, but the fact that it happens to be ghost type just adds that extra bit of cleverness, given the connotations of the word.

Me, I'll go on thinking that the deadeye resemblance is intentional. While it could be possible for the name to have no meaning beyond referencing owls' keen eyesight, I also don't see the point at just stopping there, since the whole reason deadeye exists as a term is because a deadeye must have a really fucking good eye to be able to aim so well. And of course, being an archer, Decidueye has every reason to be comparable to a deadeye.

It almost sounds like a title instead of a name, actually, which I kind of like since it feels a bit more "mature" and adds to the shady feeling it has. I get how it won't be as endearing to everybody, but I think it's cool. I don't think you need the name to tell you it's an owl for you to subconsciously realize that it's an owl, if you get where I'm coming from.

It's not even an outlandish stretch to make. A deadeye is literally an archer. When you say a tree is deciduous, the first thing that comes to mind is how it loses all its leaves once a year, which is symbolic as an ending point and a loss of life, A.K.A. death. It's about the closest you can get to a death synonym using only plant-related words, and therein lies the reason they specifically picked such an odd word. If they "just happened" to pick any old plant-related word, they could have gone for something much lower-hanging and much more recognizable as plant-related, but there's a reason they went out of their way to pick a word that's relatively obscure.

"Marine" is also a word describing anything having to do with the sea, buddy. Ballerina could possibly be mixed in, but the marine part of it is much more prominent.
