The use of latin names is to avoid confusion, because, when you say "a bear" you could be talking about any of the 8 species of bear in the world. Now, this is easily solved by adding complexity, like saying "Panda bear" or "Grizzly bear", however, this becomes a problem when you deal with uneducated people, as an example, in latin america they use the name "Gavilán" for a huge number of sparrowhawks, and what is called "Grey Gavilan" in one community can be called "Gavilanzillo" in the next one, so , arises the need for a standar name procedure, wich is the binomial system. Latin was chosen because at the time of the foundation of taxonomy, latin was the global language for science, and it stuck because changing the old names is a pain in the ass.
