Because they only redesign characters when it's necessary, aka- when they have any kind of personal relevance to something.

Caitlyn became an Elite 4 member of the Unova League; redesign warranted.

Maylene only showed up in the PWT for the sake of rematching her like hundred of others; redesign not warranted.

Red and Blue have actual roles in Sun & Moon and we battle them outside of the Battle Tree; redesign warranted.

Cynthia and Wally are Battle Tree exclusive and are only there for the sake of being rematched as with probably a hundred others; redesign not warranted.

No, it confirms that GameFreak are lazy assholes. They already had a 3D model for Wally, so they reused for the simple reason of not having to make a new one from scratch.

There's difference between a canon appearance and pure fanservice. Maylene in BW2 is pure fanservice because holy shit if you even try to pass off the PWT as canon you basically break existence. Sometimes fanservice is just fanservice.

No one knows yet cause the game isn't out. Red and Blue definitely look like they're involved in the post game at least a little bit, so they're probably canon. If the other trainers are just cameos or are basically nonexistent outside of the facilities you battle with them in then it's probably fanservice just like the PWT trainers.

Just judging by how much the normal timeskip is and how much Caitlin had grown. There hasn't been a timeskip longer than 3 years, and Caitlin changed about as much as Misty changed in HGSS.

Except they didn't simply reuse the model. The reused his ORAS design, but made a new model of him. You can clearly see the differences in proportions if you look between his ORAS and SM models

He does look a bit older, but that might be different model styles.

Most people believe Red and Blue are 20 in SM, since it's the 20th anniversary and everything, and we know they were 11 in RBY/FRLG and 14 in GSC/HGSS.

We also know there was a 2-year gap between BW and BW2, so that would make them at least 16.

BW2 and XY happen more of less at the same time, and SM seems to happen sometime after XY. So if we assume SM takes place at least 1 year after XY, Red and Blue would be 17. And for them to be exactly 20 in SM, we'd need a 3-year gap between HGSS and BW.
