My friend and I were talking about Decidueye and its use when I bring up Stakeout + SS and he goes full rage mode and says they'll read you and switch to Incineroar or something. This dude went to VGC this year btw.

But is he right, or is he missing a bunch of factors? Thoughts please.

SS + Stakeout would still be viable because its counters are pretty easy to bait. If the opponent has an Incineroar, just swap into Lando-T or something after using SS. If you know your opponent is going to hard counter you with Bisharp, instead of using SS, just switch in Magnezone and trap it. Decidueye's checks and counters aren't exactly hard to deal with.

If your Stakeout mon is already out, you can just go for Earthquake or Rock Slide on that prediction. That would do double damage to it anyway.

Is wasting a turn on a single-target Spirit Tag really something worth doing? Sounds way too gimmicky when you could be focusing on dishing out damage.

Yes, because it's good for fucking with your opponent's head: You can either stay in and become trapped, or you can switch out and date double damage. Kinda similar in vein to Aegislash with his King's Shield/Swords Dance shenanigans.

They'll most likely switch into a counter, its honestly the best play. But with that knowledge you can make plays around their switch-ins. The one problem you'll face is uncommon coverage moves and hidden powers if robinhoot makes a significant presence on the ladder.

It's decent, although you have to watch out for Pursuit trappers. It does mean your opponent can't double switch.

It is, especially since it does damage. Looks like a decent amount too in the Japanese trailer. Most likely a Ghost-type clone of Thousand Waves with 90 BP.

This. If Decidueye's stats are any good, Sprit Shackle will be used for the good STAB damage alone.

Considering that the next best physical Ghost options are Shadow Claw (70 BP) and Phantom Force (90 BP but two-turn), Spirit Shackle could absolutely be the preferred STAB move. I hope it does get Stakeout...it would be a pretty good niche.

Or

Even if it's singles, that's a trapped Lucha and you can just gain the momentum by switching to a counter.
