Im a hoennfag and I agree with you quite a bit.
Gen 3 and 4 were rather lackluster and their only saving grace was a post game facility that I really fucking want back, but then again, it was during the transition period where they decided to try out new shit, hence they literally had no clue on how to make it right right off the bat
But the remakes for gen 3 were most definitely not an improvement in the slightest they literally made them worse which is sad as all hell
Hopefully gen 4 remakes don't turn out the same
I more than anything just hold gen 3 close to my heart due to nostalgia reason
Also because I really enjoy most of the pokemon designs

Gen 4 had the physical special split, and the new evolutions for previous gen pokemon, which was enough for me even if there was nothing else. I generally remember not hating moving around as much as with Hoenn. Most of why I liked it was probably due to how much worse I thought Hoenn was in generally really like with the rival, starters, champion, new pokemon...

Basically I had incredibly low standards going into gen 4, but it brought me back in so I can't say it was a bad gen

They suffer from new territory syndrome, where the creators had no fucking clue what to do exactly, so their products were rather lackluster, it's the same shit with hoenn
Also this was the gen of unnecessary repeating patterns so some of the mons look like shit for that reason

I recently started playing it again, and it's quite refreshing. The difficulty is nice, and I love the music. Starters are pretty great too. Torterra is one of my top 5.

In respect to when the game came out, it was fucking amazing. It was the first game that let you battle your friends over the internet, and play some multi-player games through local wireless. Lots of great things about Gen 4. It didn't hold up well, but at least it was a challenge.

I don't agree regarding the starters, at least partially (really like Piplup), but everything else is pretty much true for me. I didn't play Gen 3 and 4 when they came out, because I departed Pokemon after Gen 2. However, I have been playing Diamond recently and I'm cursing way too frequently about the shitty Pokemon distribution, the confusing map and how you travel. Also I'm not involved in the story at all.
I remember disliking Gen V when it came out, but I played that one before Diamond and I really appreciated the all new Pokemon line they went with and generally appreciated it much more than I thought I would. Plus, the story is fucking ace.

I don't know why, but there was something about this gen that really creeped me out for some reason as a kid.

The only real issue with DP is the terrible handling of the regional dex, and I guess the speed, but I preferred the speed of its gameplay to Gen III. If I compare them side by side, maybe it's slower, but things like animations seem a lot faster to me. Like the actors sliding into battle real fast in Gen IV in general while in Gen III it takes like four seconds or some shit.
