It's the fact that it's second stage looked like it was wearing a costume from a Shirley Temple movie, and it's final stage is wearing a skirt/dress, and no, it doesn't look like "muh wizard robes". It looks like a god damned dress. It's not as extremely feminine as Primarina, but it's too far past the threshold for me to look at it as anything but distinctly female. It's cry is pretty high-pitched too, which tends to only happen for things like bug-types or girly pokemon.
Regardless, it's not the first time we've had gender issues, like male Gardevoir/Kirlia, Male Gothitelle line and Misdreavus, or female Sawk, Throh, Machamp, Alakazam, etc. Sometimes pokemon just happen to *look* particularly suited to one gender or another, and this time it happened to one of the starters. People just have to get the fuck over it.
Honestly, I kind of hope that the next fire starter is all girly and shit and turns into a Fire/Fairy final stage so all the "based fire bros" can have a fucking shit fit.
