See a lot of confusion on this.
The islands are as follows from west to east:
Pony
Melemele
Akala
Ula'ula

Melemele is the first we visit. Akala is the second.
We now have to agree on what we mean by "second island". Is it Melemele or Akala? Same goes for first, third and fourth island.

The next island you can travel to is Akala, so it's the second island.

In Ocarina of time, the first dungeon is the Great Deku Tree, not the westernmost dungeon on the world map, for fuck's sake.

This. And also some people claiming "the island with the lighthouse" is the third island when it's akala.
Unless there is a lighthouse on ula'ula or poni which i didn't see
