On the other hand, Cheren and Bianca really didn't have much going for them. It seemed like the protagonist was the one holding the group together, and sure enough, after he leaves, Bianca and Cheren don't even interact with each other for 2 full years.

I'm just saying that it doesn't make sense that their ship is more popular than Hilbert x Bianca. Hell, I would argue that even Hilbert x Cheren makes more sense than Cheren x Bianca.
