I'd say Koffing for Poison and Darkrai for Dark, honestly.

It's more than just "what Gen 1 Pokémon has this type"

this. also Sandshrew for Ground, Blastoise for Water, Bellsprout for Grass (don't ask me why, that's what came to mind first, always disliked the grass starters) and Lapras for Ice

And you didn't agree with Dark type pokemons because dark type only came in Gen 2 so there wasn't a pokemon from then to be attached to it.

Tyranitar is very obviously the most iconic Dark type.

There's a very good argument to be made for Magnetite/Mageneton, Scizor, Skarmory, or Metagross being the most iconic Steel type, but whoever it is it sure as hell isn't Steelix.

What about Tyranitar? It got a mega evolution just like Sableye and Absol and Houndoom. And what about Umbreon? It came early in 2nd gen.

Steelix IS iconic. Come on. It even got a mega evolution.
Scizor is a primary Bug type (scyther).
Metagross yes. It's Steven's Pokemon. It appeared in smash or brawl I think. It got a mega evo.

Clefairy was the one that were said first that there will be a fairy type. It was the birth of the idea. "Fairy" is in its name. It's the opposite of Gengar design wise. It was gonna be the pokmon franchise's Pikachu but they scrapped it because it's pink and it wouldn't appeal to boys.
